Acoustic Covers by Ken LaVoie

Fire & Rain by James Taylor. My Acoustic Cover of Fire & Rain. I love playing this song. I keep the pick tucked in the crook of the middle finger of my picking hand, then when the first verse kicks in, out it comes! I hope Mr Taylor won't hold it against me...

Acoustic cover of "Fire On The Mountain" by the Marshall Tucker Band

I always feel like I've earned my gig money when I'm done with this one. It's like the music equivalent of a competitive 5K. I hope you enjoy.

As Long As I Can See The Light, by Creedence. I love the passion John Fogerty puts into this simple, heart-felt song.

I never forget to play this one at a gig! The late great Jimmy Buffet and Alan Jackson. I've tried to capture the essence of the telecaster intro, for what it's worth!

"Old Man" by Neil Young (Acoustic cover by Ken LaVoie)

This is my cover of Kenny Chesney's "How Forever Feels." I don't do much Chesney, but I respect his work. I love how smooth his vocals are, and the dynamics of this song really showcase his talent. (I'll let YOU decide whether my cover showcases mine or not!)

Here's the first of two by the late great Toby Keith. Who's your Daddy? I learned recently that he wrote many of his own songs, which doesn't surprise me. He really was a craftsman. Most solo acoustic players put a capo on the 2nd fret and just strum. I like to do the Telecaster intro and some of the pull off's and hammer on's, having been a lead player for so long. My old Taylor acoustic forgives me and I hope you will too.

And the second of two...Instead of Willie & Waylon, we've got Willie & Toby: Beer for my horses is a good ol' fashioned tongue in cheek conservative "gunslinger" song. I love the energy. The electric guitar intro is tough to pull off on my well-worn Taylor 314CE, but I refuse to at least not try. Now let's raise up our glasses against evil forces...

Fishin' in the dark is one of those great songs that almost everyone can tap their feet to. It's in drop D tuning, which gives some extra bottom end, and adds a bit of unique character. This is one of those songs that has a lot of harmonies in the original, and I am just one guy, one guitar. I hope you approve.

Acoustic cover of Keep on a Rockin' me baby, by Steve Miller.

Listen to the Music! Every so often I hear a song and I decide that I MUST learn it. This song resides at the very top of my vocal range. In fact, I save it for my last set just because it always knocks my vocal chords on their butt. I feel like I've still got some polishing to do, but I feel that way about everything I do. I hope you enjoy.

This song has a lot of neat layers and dynamics to it, and I'm sure I'm missing some! I try to be true to Zac and use fingerpicking only for the intro, but then I use a pick the 2nd time around for variety. Recorded in the living room of the Boothbay House with the lovely Deb LaVoie on camera!

I've always loved the spirit of this song. "When my time comes, I'll hold my own...you won't find me in an old folks home" ... This is standing on the deck of our family's summer home in East Boothbay, with Inner Heron Island and the Atlantic Ocean in the background.

Such an old classic but every time I start, everyone starts tapping their fingers n' feet. I heard Toby Keith do a version of this song and just had to do it. I do it in D instead of E (like Toby) and it's a bit of a stretch vocally, but I hope you enjoy.

I LOVE taking a song that was meant for a 5 piece band and trying to pull it off with just an acoustic guitar. I have to pick and choose which dynamics to grab and which to leave out. The Telecaster intro stays of course! It used to be my job to play it in my old band Cherokee. I hope you enjoy and please comment, like and share!

You Don't Mess Around With Jim! (or Slim) by Jim Croce: Such a simple song, but it's one where you really need to get the beat perfect to make it groove. I'm not sure I've quite got it perfect yet, but I won't stop polishing until I do.

Mama's don't let your babies grow up to be cowboys...This is a bit of Waylon & Willie! I love the rhythm, it can be a challenge to keep that beat rolling and get the lyrics timed just right, especially with Willie's unique brand of "slightly off kilter" lyric placement.

This is a quick "iPhone recorded" video of my playing and singing "Honky Tonk Women" by The Rolling Stones, on a cruise we took back in January 2020.

This is my rendition of Mrs. Robinson by Simon & Garfunkel. Recorded & mixed by the talented Michael Reny

My own version of Driftaway by Dobie Gray (Mine is a little more like the Stones' version)

Instructions: Click the play button on any song to listen. If the player malfunctions, you can simply click the song title directly underneath the player, which will download it in MP3 format. HUGE Thanks to my friend and associate Mike Walter of Baretrax Studios in Clinton. One of the most talented people I know. For a "blast from the past" here are some recordings from the time that I was lead guitar for Rick West & Cherokee.

Southern Angel (Studio)
I wrote this song for my Wife Deb as a token of my love, and used it later for our first dance at our wedding. I wrote the lyrics and music, then brought it to Bare-Trax productions, did the lead vocals, doubled the lead vocals, harmony vocals, electric, 6-string acoustic, and twelve string guitar while Mike Walter did the Bass and Strings.

Hot Wired (Studio)

Nervous Breakdown (Studio)
Ken's 2 winning instrumentals in Las Vegas at the 2000 CMOA Eagle award competition. Ken's band "Cherokee did a fabulous job of backing him up. Hotwired is an instrumental by Brent Mason, Nervous Breakdown is an instrumental by Brad Paisley.
